In 11:3-4 we find that the Lord empowers His two witnesses to prophesy for 3.5 years; but it will be a time of deep sorrow and sadness as their testimony of judgment and doom will largely go unanswered. They are described as two olive trees and two lampstands: 4 images. Their witness will be global. The olive trees speak of their unique identity: cultivated olive tree (the Jews) and the wild olive tree (the Gentiles). The Lampstand speaks of their purpose; their witness to the world. The picture is of the 144,000: those who come out of the tribulation and represent the completion of the temple (the Holy Place) or the true worshipers of Jesus.
