John: Background and Overview

Dec 2 2007 in
Gospel of John

To fully understand the book of John, it is necessary to understand who John was and the audience to whom he wrote, as well as why and how he gave his testimony. As one of Jesus' inner circle of three, he witnessed the events he spoke of, and recorded them so that all may believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that through belief we may have life in his name. In his writing to the Jews, he made extensive use of contrasting ideas, metaphors, titles, and well-chosen accounts of specific miracles to demonstrate that Jesus was who he claimed to be: the Son of God, the One the Old Testament prophesied about. Understanding the overall intent and methodology of John's writings helps us to more fully interpret the meaning of his testimony.
