Jesus's final words to the Jewish leaders who condemned Him not only refer to John the Baptist and God as His witnesses, but they also condemn the so-called Jewish "teachers" who did not truly have God in their hearts. They were truly guilty, since they were of God's chosen people and had already heard and seen the Word and works of God, yet they denied the Prophet their own scripture pointed to. This is similar to many mainstream Christians, who are willing to let Jesus be their "Savior," but not their "Lord"; that is, they will let Him redeem their sins, but not guide their lives. Instead of submitting all areas of life to God's redeeming wisdom, people tend to focus on rules, traditions, and rituals that mean nothing. So, just as Jesus bore hatred for defying these meaningless practices of men, we who are called to follow God's will must do the same, even if it leads us into conflict and persecution from leaders who are blind, but who claim to see.
