When Jesus healed the son of the man from Capernaum, He chastised the man for needing to see miracles in order to believe. This is in contrast to the townspeople of Sychar, who believed in Jesus just by hearing His word. Lacking humility, the man from Capernaum needed to see wonders before he could accept the truth. Jesus healed the boy, but his reaction to this father highlights the blessing of believing the truth just by hearing. When we are humble enough to listen, the fruit of the Word can grow quickly and strongly within us. However, when we demand to see proof of God's grace, we are so entrenched in our own pride and arrogance that we will have difficulty submitting to God's wisdom. In either case God shows us Truth, but when we are listening and trusting Him fully enough to accept His guidance, we find ourselves at rest and continually within His will.
