Jesus' first miracle, one of only eight mentioned in the Book of John, was the creation of wine from water. His initial reluctance to perform this miracle illustrates his total reliance on God, regardless of what he or anyone else wanted. The fact that the transformation took place in ordinary containers, and was only revealed to the house servants, is a metaphor for how the word of Christ works in the world: it changes ordinary people, and precious few ever receive the truth of "who" God is, rather than "what" He offers. And our ordinary lives, in the Old Man, are filled instead with not just any wine, but the very best - the Spirit of God in our New Creation.
