David took a census and bad things happened because God needed David to learn something else so his kingdom can reflect that of the Messiah. David learned about being a substitute, about being a sacrifice, about being an intermediary and in so doing the choices he made reflect the choices that the Father made when He sacrificed His Son, the choices Jesus made when He sacrificed for us, and the choices that we must make for our lives to similarly emulate the Messiah.
