Samuel was a spiritual watchman over Israel, a priest, a prophet and a judge. He was faithful as the Lord’s watchman to always say what the Lord wanted him to say, but he had an emotional weakness with regard to his blessings. When it came to his sons and to his relationship with Saul he emotionally honored them above the Lord. This led to compromises which resulted in the people demanding a king and Samuel honoring Saul when he had been rejected by the Lord. We must harbor no place in our soul that takes priority over our responsibility to love the Lord God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
